May Athlete of the Month – Zach Conjelko

This award has been a long time coming for Zach. Since joining in September of 2016, he has grown so much. Not only has he grown as an athlete, he has grown as a young man. You will always see Zach smiling and happy to be at the gym.

This year in the open Zach had some very special moments that proved just how far he has come since joining the gym. It was 18.2 where Zach really showed the gym what he is made of. After getting off work, he showed up to the gym right after our last heat had finished. With no hesitation, Zach warmed up and got ready to take on the workout with the whole gym circled around him, ready to see what he could do. Wow did he impress us all! He moved through the dumbbell squat and bar facing burpee part of the workout, just like we all knew he would. When it came time to see what he could power clean with the remaining time. He managed to PR his power clean at 190 lbs!

Congrats on all you have accomplished Zach and congrats on committing yourself to Appalachian State in the fall!

Let’s learn about Zach.

Name:

Zach Conjelko

How and when did you get started with CrossFit?
I started crossfit in August of 2016. I got into crossfit when my dad told me about it
one day. He wanted to try and get into lifting again and told me I should come with
him. Ever since my first class I’ve been hooked.

What is your favorite movement or workout?
My favorite movement is a ring muscle up.

What is your least favorite movement or workout?
My least favorite movement is Cal. Rowing.

What are your long term and short-term goals?
My long-term goals are to complete college and get a Degree in Exercise
Science, and get a job as a physical therapist or as a personal trainer. A short-
term goal that I have is to make it through my first semester of College in the fall.

What would you tell someone who is on the fence about crossfit and scared to try
it?
I would tell them to put all those fears aside because you have no reason to
worry. Everyone in the crossfit community will do anything they can to be a
motivator for you. I would also tell them that you just gotta give it time and you’ll
never want to quit because it something you get hooked on and don’t want to
stop.

What kind of changes have you seen in your body, health, and fitness since
starting crossfit?
I have noticed a difference in muscle growth and weight since starting. I feel more
energetic and feel like I need to keep doing it to stay healthy. I feel that since
starting I have learned to diet better and eat cleaner foods.

What is your proudest accomplishment so far?
My proudest accomplishment so far is competing in my first open. I was a bit
nervous at first but was glad I did it in the end.

What kind of changes have you experience in your life since starting crossfit that
you didn’t expect?
I’ve noticed a change in how more open I am to talk to people. I think this is
because when you join everyone knows everybody and no one is below anyone. I
feel that this has allowed me to grow as an individual and make new friends in the
crossfit community.

What do you love most about Deep Well?
I love the friendships and energetic environment the most. I think it’s awesome to
walk in to the gym and be able to talk to whoever is in there. I think of Deep well
As a family because everyone gets along and there is never anyone just standing
looking for someone to talk with. I enjoy the energy because everyone is pumping
each other up and we all get to share the pain after a workout. I also love how
supportive the people are. I’ve been a member since 2016 and I’m graduating this
year and everyone there has supported me through these past couple of years
whether it’s with school or learning something knew at the gym.

What are your hobbies, interest and/or talents outside of CrossFit?
I enjoy playing video games and hangingout with friends when I’m not at the gym.
I am apart of my schools leadership team and do community projects around the
school and local towns. I enjoy bowling in free time and have done league since I
was three. I am also involved in my church youth group participating in vounteer
work such as serving BBQ at the soup kitchen or on the street to whoever wants
some.
