Did someone say Donuts!?
Name: Erica Prescott
How and when did you get started with CrossFit?
I first learned about CrossFit after wanting to get more into fitness. My twin sister and I had started running and were getting bored with the monotony of it so one day the CrossFit Games came on the tv, and I was held captive at the types of workouts. I loved that the sport combined running with other things I loved like weight lifting, swimming, rowing, etc. And I loved that it was all scalable and functional. We started doing similar workouts at home with dumbbells and really liked that, but we wanted more diversity. I made the goal in 2016 after moving to Mooresville that I would join a CrossFit gym as soon as the cost was within my budget. In 2017 that goal was met by joining CrossFit Deep Well.
What is your favorite movement or workout?
My favorite movement right now would probably be any weight lifting movement (Deadlift, clean and jerk or snatch), but I also love rowing. I don’t know that I have a favorite workout, but I love EMOM type workouts like Fight Gone Bad because it’s fun to see what I can accomplish in each minute.
What is your least favorite movement or workout?
Least favorite movement would be running (haha ironic cause that’s what started my whole fitness journey)
Most frustrating movement right now would be double unders!
Worst workout ever … Karen
What are your long term and short term goals?
Short term, I would like to get my double unders more consistent, get my first toes to bar and perform my first unassisted pull up.
Long term, I want to continue to improve on my weightlifting (especially squat snatches) and gymnastics skills. I want to be able to walk on my hands one day. I also want to participate in several competitions and continue to challenge myself to get out of my comfort zone.
What would you tell someone who is on the fence about CrossFit and scared to try it?
Show up and do what you can do that day. Don’t overthink the movements. Just try your best every day. At some point, we all had to do the movements for the first time in our lives, so we’ve been there.
What kind of changes have you seen in your body, health, and fitness since starting CrossFit?
I’ve seen growth in so many areas of my life since I joined CrossFit.
I’ve started making better choices in my nutrition (trying not to eat them, but I will always love doughnuts). I have seen inches lost since joining.
I’ve seen muscle growth and more definition, and I’ve continually gotten stronger since I joined.
I’m more comfortable with my body and am mentally stronger than when I started. I’m still growing in confidence, but I’ve come a long way.
What is your proudest accomplishment so far?
I have several accomplishments that I’m proud of. The biggest one would probably be rope climbs. I NEVER thought I would ever be able to do a rope climb, and now I’ve done 8 of them in a workout before. I also never thought I would be able to do box jumps, lift over 200 lbs. or be comfortable kicking up into a hand stand.
What kind of changes have you experience in your life since starting CrossFit that you didn’t expect?
I don’t think people really fully understand all the benefits of CrossFit until they try it. Overall, I feel healthier and can sleep better at night knowing I’m making steps to live a healthier life.
I definitely didn’t expect the support of a community like the one we have at Deep Well. I’ve made friends that will probably be in my life forever. The support from the members of the gym is priceless.
What do you love most about Deep Well?
The coaching and class environment. Before joining CrossFit, I worked out at home by myself. My sister and I would work out together whenever we could, but I didn’t realize how much I was missing other people being there to push me and cheer me on. The coaches take time to teach. They don’t criticize or roll their eyes. They help us stay safe and serve to be our biggest cheerleaders. The people at CrossFit Deep Well are one of a kind. I know – I’ve visited several other gyms that never measure up to this one. I’m very thankful.
What are your hobbies, interest and/or talents outside of CrossFit?
Growing up on a farm as a kid, I showed cows for over 15 years. I still love helping the Bandy’s FFA Cow Show Team.
If I’m ever home on the farm with a free hour or two, I love riding my horses.
I love anything outside like hiking, boating or kayaking, especially if I can bring my dog, Dish. I also have learned to like rock climbing (haven’t tried it outside yet).
I like baking and finding doughnut shops with my sister and Amy Thomas.
I love singing in the choir and praise team at my church. I also help out with the church youth group.
Justin would probably tell you that my hobby in 2018 was going to weddings on the weekend, and it looks like 2019 will be pretty similar.
